Job Description

A hotel housekeeping job involves maintaining high standards of cleanliness and comfort in all areas of a hotel, primarily guest rooms and public spaces. Key responsibilities include detailed cleaning tasks, restocking supplies, reporting maintenance issues, and providing courteous guest service.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Hotel housekeepers perform a wide range of tasks to ensure a welcoming environment for guests:

  • Cleaning and Sanitizing Guest Rooms: This is the primary duty, involving sweeping, mopping, vacuuming carpets, dusting all surfaces (furniture, fixtures, high-touch areas like remotes and light switches), and cleaning windows.
  • Bathroom Maintenance: Thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting toilets, sinks, showers, and tubs, and ensuring mirrors are streak-free.
  • Linen Management: Stripping beds, changing linens, and making beds according to hotel standards. This also includes replacing used towels, bath mats, and washcloths.
  • Restocking Supplies: Replenishing guest room amenities such as toiletries (soap, shampoo), coffee supplies, and general items like toilet paper and stationery.
  • Waste Disposal: Emptying trash receptacles and replacing garbage bags in all areas.
  • Public Area Upkeep: In some roles, housekeepers are responsible for cleaning common areas like lobbies, hallways, elevators, and public restrooms, which includes vacuuming, polishing surfaces, and ensuring a presentable appearance.
  • Reporting and Communication: Identifying and reporting any maintenance issues, damages, or equipment malfunctions (e.g., a burnt-out light bulb, a broken faucet) to supervisors or the maintenance department. They also communicate room status (clean, occupied, dirty) to the front desk.
  • Guest Interaction: Responding to guest requests and inquiries in a professional and timely manner, such as providing extra towels or an additional bed.
  • Safety and Security: Following all health and safety protocols, handling lost and found items according to hotel procedures, and maintaining the confidentiality and security of guest rooms.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

Successful hotel housekeepers typically possess a mix of hard and soft skills:

  • Attention to Detail: A crucial skill to ensure the highest standards of cleanliness and guest satisfaction.
  • Physical Stamina: The job is physically demanding, requiring the ability to perform repetitive tasks such as bending, lifting, standing, and walking for extended periods.
  • Time Management: The ability to prioritize tasks efficiently to clean a set number of rooms within a tight schedule.
  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal skills to interact effectively with guests and team members.
  • Knowledge of Cleaning: Familiarity with proper cleaning techniques, chemicals, and equipment, while adhering to health and safety regulations.
  • Integrity and Discretion: Housekeepers work in private spaces and must be trustworthy and professional.
  • Teamwork: The role often requires collaboration with other housekeepers, front desk staff, and the maintenance crew.
  • Flexibility: Ability to work various shifts, including weekends and holidays, based on the hotel's operational needs.

Previous experience in housekeeping or a similar hospitality role is often preferred, but hotel will provide on-the-job training.
